This year the Matthew Rusike Children’s Home (MRCH) week was themed “Let us stop the fire” as the Christ woven nest for vulnerable children and orphans is burning and this requires coordinated efforts so as to rescue the nest. The commemorations were done as the tradition in the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe connexion with lessons for the seven days ending with the Big Sunday at MRCH in Harare on the 7th of June 2026.
The programme line-up for the Big Sunday was filled with exciting activities from presentations by the Matthew Rusike Children as well as fundraising activities that were done as a way of raising funds for the home. The church leadership that graced the occasion included the Presiding Bishop, General Secretary and the Mission Director.
The Board chair of MRCH Dr. G. Hapanyengwi gave his welcoming remarks and mentioned in his speech the importance of the gathering as it reflects the need for protecting the nest from continuously burning as all the members have a responsibility.
Mr Jeffrey Chasi a representative of the MRCH care leavers also gave an address and introduced some of the care leavers of the home who are now grown up professionals with their families. It therefore shows that the home is doing a lot of work in producing future leaders and responsible family men/women.
The Presiding Bishop Revd S. Sithole was the preacher of the day and gave a challenging sermon with the theme: “Iwe neni tine basa” addressing the issue of taking care of the orphans and the vulnerable children. He emphasised the importance of providing the resources for MRCH so as to fulfill the vision of the late Revd Matthew Jacha Rusike. He also led in the fundraising whereby the congregants participated and gave generously towards putting out the fire at MRCH.
