Mukoki

Blending Faith, Farming, and Music

Through versatility and dedication, Rev. Douglas Mukoki, the Kwekwe East Circuit Super intendent, is reshaping the traditional image of a pastor. Beyond his spiritual guidance through prayers, healing, and deliverance, Rev. Mukoki has established himself as a thriving farmer and talented musician, making significant contributions to his community. Rev. Mukoki’s passion for farming can be traced back to his childhood, inspired by both his mother and the late Zambian farmer, Mr. Nyoni.

“I was born a farmer. My parents went to Zambia during the Federation around 1956-1962. I was born on a farm. I was inspired by my mother, who was a hard working farmer. When I went to Zambia in 2010, I started doing horticulture. I was inspired by the late Mr Nyoni and his children from 15 Miles Branch in Zambia, who gave me a piece of land. This is where I started serious farming,” he said.

Currently managing a 3.3-hectare plot at Mazareta Farm in Patchway, Kadoma. It is registered under the DouGra Investments. Rev. Mukoki diligently balances his church responsibilities with his agricultural pursuits.

“I dedicate every Monday, my off day, to the farm. During my leave days, I’m fully engaged in farming. I view this not just as a hobby, but as a business,” he explained. He paid tribute to his wife for being a pillar of support in all his projects.

The Reverend’s diverse farming operations include cattle ranching, sheep, goats, and various small livestock, as well as a variety of vegetables like tomatoes, cabbages, watermelons, and maize, which he cultivates during the rainy season. He praises the steady demand for his produce, although he expresses concern over middlemen (makoronyera)who often undervalue his products.

“While I am satisfied with market prices, the intermediaries (makoronyera) can offer significantly lower rates, only to sell the produce at much higher prices. Thank fully, within my church community, many members purchase chickens, tomatoes, and vegetables directly from me,” he noted. Rev. Mukoki has ambitious plans for the future. “If resources allow, I aim to acquire a larger 25-hectare farm. My current plot, at 3.3 hectares, is limited for commercial farming purposes,” he shared. He is also appealing to the government for additional land to expand his agricultural operations.

“I need land from the government. If God permits, I want to have my piece of land. My plot is not enough for commercial farming. It is a little bit small because it’s 3.3 hectares, but I am utilising it fully,” he added, explaining his grazing arrangements for his cattle.

Rev. Mukoki said it was important to maintain the genetics of his purebred goats through controlled feeding practices, ensuring they thrive without compromising their lineage. To support his farming venture, he em ploys three permanent workers and two part time workers. He increases the workforce to 15 during peak planting seasons. His goal is to raise a herd of 150 cattle by 2030.

However, Rev. Mukoki’s efforts are not without challenges. He is particularly concerned about the impact of illegal artisanal mining in the area, which has led to dangerous gullies that pose a threat to livestock. “These uncovered trenches can trap and harm our cattle,” he cautioned. Rev. Mukoki faces issues of crop theft and vandalism, which threaten the sustain ability of his produce.

“We are vigilant about protecting our crops and equipment from thieves who have been plaguing our village,” he stated. In a heartfelt message to his fellow ministers, friends, and church members, Rev. Mukoki expressed the vital role his farming projects play in supplementing his income. “These projects allow me to live a liberated life. With my farming, I can provide for myself without constantly buying meat or mealie meal. It offers financial stability,” he said. Rev. Mukoki continues to inspire those around him, proving that a commitment to faith can harmoniously coexist with a dedication to agriculture and the arts.
